Deciding to hire a foreign domestic helper (FDH) is a big step for any Hong Kong household. With over 390,000 helpers currently supporting families across the city, the system is well-established but can feel overwhelming due to recent regulatory changes.
Whether you are looking for childcare support or elderly care, understanding your hiring options is the first step to a successful match.
There are two primary pathways to finding the right helper for your home. Here is how they compare in the current landscape:
| Feature | Direct Hire | Traditional Employment Agency |
| Autonomy | High. You interview as many candidates as you like and choose the best fit personally. | Limited. You are often restricted to a “shortlist” provided by the agency. |
| Cost | Lower. You save significantly on recruitment fees (HKD 10,000+ savings). | Higher. Fees typically range from HKD 12,000 to HKD 20,000. |
| Speed | Faster. Direct communication avoids agency “middle-man” delays. | Variable. Depends on the agency’s internal processing speed. |
| Ethics | Transparent. You ensure the helper is not charged illegal placement fees. | Risk. Some unethical agencies may still overcharge workers. |
Pro-Tip: Even if you choose “Direct Hire,” you can still use a Visa Processing Service to handle the heavy paperwork for a fraction of the cost of a full agency fee.
The ability to handle paperwork yourself depends entirely on the helper’s nationality and current contract status:
Finished Contracts: If the helper is currently in Hong Kong and finishing their 2-year contract, you can technically handle the processing yourself.
Terminated/Break Contracts or Overseas: If the helper is overseas or has a “broken” contract, Philippine law requires you to use an accredited agency to notarize the contract and verify documents through the Migrant Workers Office (MWO).
Note: As of March 2026, the MWO verification fee for new contracts is HKD 320.

Mandatory Agency Use: The Indonesian government requires all hiring processes to be handled through an accredited employment agency, regardless of the helper’s status. You cannot process an Indonesian helper’s visa entirely on your own.
Choosing the right nationality often comes down to your family’s language and cultural needs.
| Feature | Filipino Helpers | Indonesian Helpers |
| Language | Excellent English; some speak basic Cantonese. | Fluent Cantonese; basic to moderate English. |
| Cuisine | Adapt easily to Western and local diets; comfortable handling pork. | Experts in local “wet market” shopping; usually Muslim (do not eat pork/alcohol). |
| Regulations | Minimum age of 23; strong support via MWO/DMW. | Minimum age of 23; must have secondary education and skills certificates. |
| Rest Days | Typically Sundays; often gather in Central/Admiralty. | May prefer Fridays or Saturdays; often gather in Causeway Bay. |
Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW): As of late 2025, the MAW has been updated to HKD 5,100 per month.
Food Allowance: If you do not provide food, the minimum allowance is HKD 1,236.
Statutory Holidays: Starting in 2026, Easter Monday has been added as a statutory holiday, bringing the total to 14 days per year.
MWO Fee Adjustment: The verification fee for new Filipino contracts is now HKD 320 (effective 01 March 2026).
