Last year, the Minimum Allowable Wage was frozen for the first time.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14255\" src=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/HelperChoice-Salary-Survey-HK-2016-4.png\" alt=\"Helperchoice salary survey hk 2020\" width=\"940\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_average_salary_of_HK5144_for_the_first_time\"><\/span><strong>An average salary of HK$5,144 for the first time<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For the fifth consecutive year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/\">HelperChoice<\/a>\u2019s annual salary survey in Hong Kong shows an increase in the average salary offered by employers, reaching <strong>HK$5,144, while the Minimum Allowable Wage of HK$4,630 remained unchanged.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/\">HelperChoice<\/a> data, this year, foreign domestic workers have been earning HK$5,144 on average, equalling a 2.63% increase compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/c\/press-centre\/domestic-workers-salary-survey-hong-kong-2020\">previous study in 2020<\/a>, and a 17% increase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/c\/domestic-workers-salary-survey-hong-kong-2016\">since 2016<\/a>!<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/b14e6890-5385-49c2-ac3f-a5fa0407d83d-screenshot2021-09-21at10-20-11.jpg\" alt=\"salary survey neighborhoods 2021\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Covid-19_boosting_foreign_domestic_workers_salaries\"><\/span><strong>Covid-19, boosting foreign domestic workers\u2019 salaries<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While the Covid-19 pandemic has been affecting the city, many foreign domestic workers willing to come for work have been unable to reach Hong Kong due to travel restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Hong Kong Immigration Department statistics, the number of Foreign Domestic Workers in the city has been decreasing, since 2020, for the first time. From 399,320 to 373,884 migrant domestic workers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clear_disparities_according_to_the_employment_location\"><\/span><strong>Clear disparities according to the employment location<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Regarding the districts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/\">HelperChoice<\/a> identifies clear disparities in the domestic helpers\u2019 salaries according to their employment location. Following the trends of their previous years\u2019 observations, families living in areas considered as more wealthy offer a higher salary to their helpers.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.helperchoice.com\/c\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/89cfabd1-48f3-4f14-b6a9-6063cc9c6b46-screenshot2021-09-21at10-22-45.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>In 2021, the top five Hong Kong districts with the highest wages are: Central &amp; Western, Southern, Wan Chai, Sai Kung and for the first time, Yau Tsim Mong. Foreign domestic workers in these districts might expect an average salary of HK$5,318, with several employers offering between HK$10,000 to HK$20,000 per month.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the five districts offering the lowest salaries this year are: Kwai Tsing, Kwun Tong, Wong Tai Sin, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun. Employers in these areas offer an average salary of HK$4,866, which is only HK$236 above the Minimum Allowable Salary (MAW) at the time of HK$4,630. An increase compared to 2020.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall_a_tougher_financial_situation_for_foreign_domestic_workers\"><\/span><strong>Overall, a tougher financial situation for foreign domestic workers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite the increasing average salary, many foreign domestic workers already based in the city expect more. This year, HelperChoice registered an average requested salary of HK$5,568.
