Breast Cancer Awareness For Foreign Domestic Helpers In Hong Kong

Updated on 19 March 2026

In support of Pink October, organized by the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation, HelperChoice aims to raise awareness among foreign domestic helpers (FDWs) in Hong Kong about breast cancer—while also sharing affordable screening options and free community support available locally.

Breast cancer awareness is not only about knowledge—it’s about early detection, access to care, and support.

What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that begins in the cells of the breast. It develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and may spread to nearby tissues or other parts of the body through the bloodstream or lymphatic system.

It is the most common cancer among women worldwide, although men can also be affected in rare cases.

Key Facts About Breast Cancer in Hong Kong

According to the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Registry Report No. 9, common risk factors among 14,905 local breast cancer patients include:

  • 77.7% lacked regular exercise (less than 3 hours per week)

  • 65.8% did not breastfeed

  • 38.6% were overweight or obese

  • 37.1% experienced high stress levels (more than 50% of the time)

Why Screening Matters

Regular breast screening is strongly recommended for all women—including domestic helpers.

An effective screening routine includes:

  • Self-breast examination

  • Clinical breast assessment

  • Mammography screening

Early detection is key. Research shows that mammography screening can reduce breast cancer mortality by 25–30%.

Signs of Potential Breast Cancer

According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer may present with the following symptoms:

  • A lump or thickening in the breast (often painless)

  • Changes in breast size, shape, or appearance

  • Skin changes such as dimpling, redness, or pitting

  • Changes in the nipple or areola

  • Abnormal or bloody discharge from the nipple

⚠️ Important: Early-stage breast cancer may not show any symptoms. This is why regular check-ups and screenings are essential, especially for those at higher risk.

Who Is at Risk?

Breast cancer primarily affects women, although 0.5–1% of cases occur in men.

Risk factors include:

  • Age (higher risk after 40)

  • Obesity

  • Alcohol consumption

  • Family history of breast cancer

  • Exposure to radiation

  • Reproductive history

  • Smoking

  • Hormone therapy after menopause

It’s important to note that many women diagnosed with breast cancer have no known family history, so everyone should remain vigilant.

Genetic Risk Factors

Certain inherited gene mutations significantly increase risk, including:

  • BRCA1

  • BRCA2

  • PALB-2

Women with these mutations may consider preventive measures, including medical interventions.
