If you are an employer, please see this article instead: Tips for Conducting a Domestic Helper Interview
The domestic helper interview is an important part of the hiring process for the employer. After the interview, they will have a better idea of the person you are. Here are some tips that will help every domestic helper to prepare for upcoming job interviews.
The employer is looking for a trustworthy domestic helper applicant so make sure you are on time. In case you are running late, let the employer know by calling her or sending her a message so she will know. Inform the employer at least one day in advance if you cannot attend the interview.
As a domestic helper has to live with the employer, you will spend a lot of time with your employer in the future so just be yourself during the interview. Can you only cook with a recipe? Just tell your employer that so she will not be disappointed if she hires you and expects you to cook 5-star meals.
The employer may invite you to her home for the domestic helper interview. If you don’t feel comfortable or don’t trust the situation, don’t do this. If you decide to meet at their home, bring a friend who can wait for you. If you do the interview over the phone, make sure you are in a quiet room where nobody will disturb you.
If you have reference letters from your current or previous employers, bring these. You can also print your HelperChoice profile or have it ready on your phone so you can go over it. If you love cooking, you can bring pictures of the food you made.
Ask your employer what they are looking for. Think you cannot match the expectations, just let them know. There will be many other employers who may be looking for a domestic helper like you.
It may happen that you were terminated before. Tell the employer about it and explain why you think it didn’t work out. If you broke your contract, also explain why.
The employer asks you to sign the domestic helper contract, but you don’t think it will work, just tell them no. Don’t sign the contract if you have no intention to work for them. It is bad for your reputation and the employer will be disappointed when they find out.
The interview is not only for the employer to decide on whether or not they want to hire you, but it is also a time for you to decide whether you like them and the job. Don’t settle, but find the right job for you. For example, you can ask about the duties, the work schedule, the living arrangement, the rest day arrangement, etc.
Employers will ask you many questions. Think about the possible questions beforehand and prepare some answers. Possible questions are:
A good interview is about clear communication, honesty, and showing your willingness to work and learn. When you prepare well and answer sincerely, you increase your chances of finding an employer who is a good match for you.
Believe in your experience, stay calm, and speak with confidence — you deserve the right opportunity.
