First-Aid Training for Your Domestic Helper: A Complete Safety Guide

(Updated on 14 February 2026)

Having a first aid certificate is important for a domestic helper. Domestic helpers may be responsible for the well-being and safety of your children or your family. Accidents and emergency can happen at any time, and having first aid knowledge and skills can make a significant difference in providing immediate care and potentially saving life.

The Importance Of First-aid Training For Domestic Helpers

Here are some reasons why a first aid certificate is important for a domestic helper:

  1. Emergency Preparedness: Obtaining a first aid certificate equips domestic helper with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively in emergency situations. Domestic helpers will learn how to recognize and respond to common medical emergencies, such as choking, burns, cuts, falls, or cardiac arrest. This preparedness can help them provide immediate assistance until professional medical help arrives.
  2. Prompt Response: Domestic helpers often work closely with children, elderly individuals, or individuals with health conditions. In the event of an accident or sudden illness, being trained in first aid can enable them to respond quickly and appropriately. Domestic helpers with the ability to administer basic first aid can help alleviate pain, prevent further injury, and stabilize the individuals’ condition until medical professionals can take over.
  3. Safety Promotion: First aid training also teaches domestic helpers about safety practices and measures to prevent accidents or injuries from occurring. They will learn how to identify potential hazards within the household environment and implement preventive measures. By promoting safety and minimizing risks, domestic helpers can contribute to creating a safer living environment for those you care for.

Remember that while having a first aid certificate is important, it should never substitute professional medical care. In case of a severe or life-threatening emergency, always call the emergency services for immediate assistance.

How To Renew Your Helper’s First-aid Training Certificate?

The validity period of a first aid certificate can vary depending on the organization providing the certification. Typically, first aid training certificates are valid for a certain period to ensure that individuals maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Two to Three Years: In many cases, first aid certificates are valid for a duration of two to three years. This duration is common for basic first aid and CPR certifications. It means that domestic heleprs will need to renew their certification within that duration to ensure their knowledge and skills are current.
  • Annual Refreshers: Some organizations or industries may require participants annual refreshers or recertification to maintain a valid first aid certificate. This practice ensures that individuals stay updated on the latest techniques and guidelines in first aid and can provide effective assistance in emergency situations.

It’s important to note that the expiration period may vary depending on the specific organisation or regulatory requirements in Hong Kong. Therefore, it’s crucial to check with the issuing organisation or local authorities to determine the exact validity period of a first aid certificate in certain area.

For domestic helpers, if they wish to maintain their first aid certification, they will typically need to attend a refresher course or undergo recertification training before the current certificate expires. This ensures that domestic helpers stay updated on any changes in techniques, protocols, or guidelines, and continue to demonstrate proficiency in providing first aid.

Remember that even if your helper’s first aid certificate expires, the knowledge and skills they have gained are still be valuable. However, it’s recommended to keep their certification current to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest best practices in first aid for your family and your child’s interests.
